Born in Mumbai, Cardozo, an alumnus of the Indian Military Academy, was commissioned into the 5th Gorkha Rifles. In 1971, during the Indo-Pak war, Cardozo, then a Major, was commanding a company in the Eastern Sector. His unit was instrumental in the liberation of Bangladesh. However, it was during this campaign that he faced a life-altering situation.

In a tragic turn of events, Cardozo stepped on a landmine, resulting in severe injuries to his leg. In a situation where immediate medical help was unavailable, he displayed extraordinary courage by using his khukri, a traditional Gorkha knife, to amputate his own injured leg.
